Abstract:
"The purpose of the material storage assessment is to review where, how and why materials and equipment are stored at Fermilab to identify ESH/property/security issues or gaps. Fermilab utilizes almost all of its buildings to store equipment and materials for certain and potential future use. Cost savings and waste reduction have been realized in the past by reusing and repurposing old scientific equipment. However, there are many factors to consider when storing items, including: the location conditions, security needs, property requirements, material handling, usefulness of the material/equipment.

The scope of this assessment will include a look at best practices and opportunities for improvement on what materials are being stored at Fermilab, where laboratory equipment is stored (including utilization of the warehouses, underground enclosures and service buildings), the logic behind keeping equipment and materials in storage, how they're stored, how materials are handled when moved, and security of the items. The property, ESH, and security Management Systems will be active participants and programs considered as requirements."
